We believe each cultural and historical resource holds a story. The story of what once was leads to the present and shapes the wave of the future.

As you embark on your project, finding the balance between project goals and the preservation of these rich cultural assets can pose some challenges. But it is vital to the legacy of the land and the future of your project.

At Eocene Environmental Group, our team of archaeologists is here to guide you through identification and impact mitigation. We work with numerous agencies around the country to:

  • Research, identify and record all cultural resources within a project area.
  • Evaluate their significance.
  • Assess the potential impact of a project on significant cultural resources.
  • Provide recommendations for avoiding and mitigating impact.

National Historic Preservation Act Sections 106 & 110

To comply with Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), our team can perform the following services:

  • Class I literature searches.
  • Class III pedestrian surveys.
  • Monitoring, testing and data recovery investigations.

Federal agencies use our compliance documents in consultation with State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs), Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs) and Native American Tribes. Our senior staff meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.

Tribal Support

Our team has successfully worked with their tribal counterparts in archaeology on numerous projects. We have worked directly for tribes and tribal entities and for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) on behalf of tribes. We have conducted conversations both in formal settings and informal activities including site visits with tribal officials at all levels. Officials who we’ve worked with include:

  • Tribal council chairpersons and members.
  • District chairpersons and council members.
  • Tribal committees.
  • Resource specialists.
  • Traditional leaders and practitioners.

Historic Building Conservation & Restoration

Preserving historic buildings is important for cultural heritage, educational value, tourism and economic benefits, environmental sustainability and more. Our environmental division has inventoried, recorded and reported on hundreds of federally owned buildings throughout the United States.

This included developing a methodology with the BIA for identifying and choosing which structures should be recorded to assist the BIA with its Section 110 responsibilities and to assist with planning potential uses, demolition or rehabilitation of recorded buildings. As part of reporting, we include drawings of buildings, photographs and all appropriate forms. Our team also offers recommendations for rehab and maintenance when applicable.

Ethnographic Studies

Ethnographic studies play a crucial role in understanding different cultures. To perform an ethnographic study, our team does extensive research in the cultural context of a specific group of people to understand their behaviors, beliefs and practices. Eocene’s archaeology staff have worked on several ethnographic studies, including:

  • Phoenix, Arizona’s Chinatown.
  • Afro-American community of Mobile, Arizona.
  • Pacific Islanders (mainly Tongans and Samoans) living within the Salt Lake Valley, Utah.
  • Mormon farmers in southern Utah.
  • Hard rock miners in Utah.
  • Transient dam construction workers in Arizona.

Each of these studies has combined the use of archival histories (including historic photos), oral histories and the archaeological record.

Our senior staff meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology. Eocene always utilizes staff who meet these standards when recording archaeological and historical sites, districts and objects.
