Mary Alfson

Director of Cultural Resources

Mary Alfson joined the Eocene team in 2024 and serves as the director of cultural resources in our environmental division. She thrives in client management and business development, where she focuses on building meaningful relationships with clients. Mary brings extensive expertise in surface transportation projects and federal agency work, with a focus on Section 106/110 and Section 4(f) compliance. She has also taught Section 106 and cultural resource management at the college level and to industry groups.

Mary holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, along with master’s degrees in historic preservation and organizational management. Her career began at a small firm in Pennsylvania, and she later spent a large portion of her career at a large engineering firm managing their national cultural resources practice.  Mary is on the Transportation Research Board (TRB) committee for historic and archaeological preservation in transportation and is also a member of the Vernacular Architecture Forum (VAF) and the Society of Industrial Archaeology (SIA).

Outside of work, Mary enjoys antiquing, thrifting and cooking vegetables from a local CSA farm she belongs to.
