Biological Resources

Eocene Environmental Group Offers Comprehensive Biological Resource Services, Aligning Projects With Legal Requirements.

At Eocene Environmental Group, we understand that every project comes with unique environmental challenges and regulatory requirements. Whether assessing sensitive species, conducting specialized surveys or ensuring compliance, our team is committed to providing biological resource management with expertise and care.

Field Surveys

Our team of biologists are experienced at conducting field investigations for a vast array of different species in a multitude of ecosystems. Prior to field review, our team utilizes several resources to determine potential biological and/or special status species concerns. Based on our findings, we provide recommendations to prevent or limit costly impacts on biological resources.

Once in the field, our biologists complete a thorough review of the project area to:

  1. Document the existing vegetative communities and habitat conditions.
  2. Evaluate the habitat suitability within the project area for special-status plant and animal species.
  3. Assess potential impacts to special-status species.
  4. Document signs and/or observations of special-status species.

We routinely conduct specialized surveys for sensitive resources, including:

  • Migratory bird surveys, including raptor and eagle surveys.
  • Burrowing owl surveys.
  • Vegetation/habitat characterization and mapping.
  • Habitat sensitivity analysis.
  • Delineation of wetlands and waters.
  • Sensitive wildlife and plant surveys.
  • Threatened and endangered species protocol surveys.
  • Acoustic bat surveys.

Common species that need permits that we routinely work with include:

  • Mojave and Sonoran desert tortoise.
  • Mohave ground squirrel.
  • Mexican and Northern spotted owl.
  • Southwestern willow flycatcher.
  • Yellow-billed cuckoo.
  • Yuma Ridgeway rail.
  • California tiger salamander.
  • California red-legged frog.
  • Mountain yellow-legged frog.
  • Utah prairie dog.

Restoration Planning & Monitoring

Growth and development can disturb ecological habitats, making the need for restoration planning and ongoing monitoring essential to rebuilding the ecosystem. Our team is here to support you during this part of your project, with direct experience in planning, implementation and support. We will ensure sites are progressing towards identified success metrics.

When designing restoration plans, our biologists follow a proven system:

  1. Establish baseline conditions.
  2. Set restoration goals and prepare restoration plan document.
  3. Implement plan.
  4. Conduct ongoing restoration monitoring.

Biological Compliance & Monitoring

Resource monitoring is dynamic and requires expertise, as it often involves long periods of inactivity followed by rapid and decisive action. Our biologists have logged thousands of hours performing construction monitoring and will work alongside your team as a resource to keep your project moving. We have developed specialized trainings for various special status species and habitats and can facilitate on-site training, ensuring construction personnel have the tools and support to perform work in sensitive habitats. Our staff has the commitment level and interpersonal communication skills that engenders respect among the construction crew, the client and other environmental inspectors.

Threatened, Endangered & Sensitive Species

Our team is skilled at analyzing short-term, long-term and cumulative impacts; we evaluate the presence of federally and state protected, threatened, or endangered plant and animal species (listed and proposed) in accordance with formal and/or informal consultation procedures described in Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and similar state laws. We conduct threatened and endangered species protocol surveys and routinely coordinate with federal and state agencies such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

We assist clients with environmental policy, including but not limited to the following laws:

Regulatory Compliance

Eocene has established trusted relationships with regulatory agencies by consistently delivering high-quality, defensible work. Our experience working both with and on behalf of agencies like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Land Management gives us a unique insight into their processes, helping streamline coordination, accelerate approvals and reduce uncertainty for our clients.
