Proximity Malt Data Collection & Environmental Quantification

The Situation

As consumer demand for transparency and sustainability continues to grow, malt companies brewers are increasingly expected to demonstrate the environmental impact of their supply chains. Proximity Malt recognized that this shift means moving beyond traditional sourcing metrics and demonstrating real, data-driven insight into agricultural practices at the farm level. While the company had strong relationships with growers, it needed a more robust system for collecting, quantifying and managing sustainability data.

To address this need, Proximity Malt sought additional expertise to support data collection and environmental quantification efforts. Eocene was engaged to work directly with barley growers,
gather field-level information, and translate that data into meaningful environmental metrics. This partnership provided Proximity Malt with the data expertise and processes needed to build a transparent, measurable picture of its supply chain footprint.

Our Solution

Field-level Data Collection & Aggregation

Eocene partnered with Proximity Malt to build a multi‑year foundation of field‑level data, beginning with pilot programs in 2021 and 2022. This work expanded significantly with the launch of the Climate‑Smart/AMP Grant initiative, which began incorporating 2023 grower data. As part of this effort, Eocene developed the RegenMalt™ marketing data package that was introduced in Spring 2024, providing customers with clear, customized sustainability insights. Each buyer receives a tailored marketing sheet that calculates the greenhouse‑gas offset associated with choosing RegenMalt™ over conventionally grown barley, translating reductions into relatable impact metrics such as vehicle‑miles avoided.

Life Cycle Accounting (LCA)

Eocene conducted farm‑level life cycle accounting (LCA) for Proximity Malt’s 2023 data year. A processing‑plant LCA is planned as the next step, enabling a full value‑chain perspective. The resulting LCA data is intended to serve as a trusted environmental footprint resource for upstream buyers.

Headquartered in Wisconsin, Proximity Malt is the first new-generation, full-scale, regional malting facility in North America. The company strategically locates its two malting facilities near major barley‑growing regions, allowing grains to be sourced as locally as possible to support a more sustainable and cost‑efficient supply chain. By combining premium grain, advanced technology, and strong partnerships, Proximity Malt continues to set the standard for innovation and leadership within the malt supply industry.
