Nibo Urzua-Hermosilla
Technology Consultant
Being employee owned, unique and fast growing, mentorship opportunities, and career development is what Nibaldo Urzua-Hermosilla values in Eocene Environmental Group. Nibaldo, Nibo for short, was impressed with the company from the start when he found out that many of the company executives originally started working in entry-level field positions, just like he did. “I think that is a unique characteristic about our company, and something that sets us apart from others. It shows the integrity of the organization.”
And while his career path before working for Eocene has been anything but straight, he was initially drawn to the industry because of his passion and interest in nature, trees and vegetation. Nibo recalls, “My father was really into the natural environment, and I have fond memories of us taking walks and hikes and him showing me certain trees and plants.”
As an avid cyclist, Nibo continues to spend a fair amount of time outdoors. “I am reminded of my appreciation for the natural world on a consistent basis,” he says. “I have a lot of energy and so I enjoy spending as much time as I can outdoors.” He has even represented the company as a rider on Tour des Trees, an annual long-distance cycling adventure hosted by an industry organization called the TREE Fund. “Each time I participate in this ride, I’m reminded of the great people who make up our organization. They’re all so friendly and down to earth and welcoming. It truly does feel like a big family.”
Originally from Chile, Nibo got started in his career as an industrial designer in his home country before eventually moving to the U.S. to seek more opportunities. During an internship with an outdoor education program, Nibo found his passion in trees. Once the internship was complete, he began his journey with Wright Tree Service, an affiliate company of ours, as a groundsperson and was later promoted to a work planner and stayed in the position for 10 years before transitioning to his role as a technology consultant for Terra Spectrum Technologies (now our technology and innovation division) in the fall of 2011.
FieldNote, our geospatial data collection software, is what Nibo spends his time on, educating and training our clients and their users. He describes the experience to do so as “amazing” and says, “Seeing our clients’ faces when they realize that our software can make their jobs easier is such a great feeling. I have a natural desire to help other people, so I feel like my role is perfect for me.” And to further add to his unique skillset, Nibo is bilingual, which helps him communicate to a broader audience in the industry. “I get the opportunity to train people in both languages which is very gratifying. This skill has allowed me to expand my role within the organization, which I’m grateful for as well.”
When asked to summarize his time with the company, he says, “It’s been filled with a lot of learning and growing. I appreciate that the company offers opportunities for growth and has provided me with mentors to allow me to continue developing.”
As for the future, Nibo is excited about the future of Eocene. “I truly believe in our mission. Not only for our impact on the environment, but also for the opportunities it allows our employees. This is where I want to be.”
